We are among the largest producers of tea in the country with a workforce of 40000 (including all categories). Apeejay Tea Group has 17 estates spread over 50000 acres in Assam, produce 25 million kilograms (approx) of tea. Apeejay Tea Limited and Empire & Singlo Tea Limited, part of Apeejay Tea Group, date back over a 100 years and are amongst the oldest tea companies in India.
Apeejay Tea was formerly Assam frontier Tea Limited established in 1889. Empire & Singlo is the merged entity following the amalgamation of Empire Plantations (India) Ltd. established in 1863 and Singlo (India) Tea Co. Ltd established in 1864.
In 2005, the Group acquired Typhoo, UK's third largest tea brand and an over 100-year-old iconic British brand. This was India's second largest global FMCG acquisition and the 7th biggest corporate takeover by an Indian company, to date. It gives us significant opportunity to vertically integrate our tea business as well as expand our footprint in international markets. London Fruit & Herb, Heath & Heather, Melroses and Ridgeways among others were also acquired from Premier Foods UK.
Quality consciousness and efficient process control enables Apeejay Tea Group to stay competitive and provide better value to its customers. We sell to bulk markets through the domestic auction sale system and increasingly to international customers directly. Our clientele includes major buyers in the UK, Germany, Russia, Iran, UAE and Pakistan, amongst others. Our premium teas are the pick of international customers, like Unilever, Tetley, UK; Tazo, USA (supplier to Starbucks, worldwide) and Typhoo. Moving up the value chain and responding to customer preference, in 2000,Apeejay Tea launched its own labels Mantra and MahaMantra into the Indian retail space.
In 2008, Typhoo made its foray into India. Defining the changing tastes and preferences of the urban Indian consumer, Apeejay Tea Group introduced into India a select range of Typhoo Teas, including Fruit Infusions, Flavoured Teas, Premium Classic Assam Teas and Green Tea. Manufactured at a world class hub located in Kolkata, Typhoo's domestic marketing and distribution network is being aggressively expanded to make its teas available to more consumers across India. At Typhoo we have a long tradition of working closely with our suppliers. Our dedicated team of tasters travel extensively throughout the World to source the finest teas for our blends.
It's a matter of great pride for us that Harrods, London has appointed Apeejay as its sole India partner for sourcing Indian Teas. An exclusive collection of our single-estate teas, Sessa, Khobong and Pengaree are on Harrods' prestigious shelves.
Tea is a labour intensive industry and our driving objective has been to improve living and working conditions for our large workforce and their 100,000 dependants. We aim at benefiting all aspects of human life, from providing homes and bringing relief to flood victims, to constructing schools and providing health care through our own hospitals. Supporting our people with the latest technology underlies our strategy for success.
In this era of rapid ecological depletion, it is imperative for companies to restore the balance. We strive to achieve this through improved field management, infilling, rejuvenation, interplanting, drainage, better plucking techniques and a host of other state-of-the-art innovations. Our future focus is to increase the yield of environment friendly teas.
All our gardens follow internationally benchmarked safety, quality and ethical standards. As active participants of the Ethical Tea Partnership and Ethical Trading Initiative, we commit to responsible business practices in tea. We have received HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) certification for implementing a systematic preventive approach to safety throughout the tea cultivation and processing stages. In partnership with our suppliers and growers, we have adopted the Quality Assurance Programme (QAP) of Typhoo. Two of Apeejay Tea's plantations in Assam i.e Budlabeta and Khobong are Fairtrade Certified as on July 2009. The standard setting body, Fairtrade Labelling Organisations (FLO) International, through its Certification body FLO-CERT GmbH, awards this certificates to global Plantations which qualify. Such a certification impacts favourably the quality of life of the garden workers, bringing to them a host of economic, social and environmental benefits.
